hy|a|cinth «HY uh sihnth», noun.
1. any one of various spring plants that grow from bulbs and have spikes of small, fragrant, bell-shaped flowers. Hyacinths belong to the lily family.
2. a flower or bulb of any of these plants.
3. Greek Mythology. a plant said to have sprung from the blood of the slain youth Hyacinthus, variously identified by different authors as the Turk's-cap lily, the iris, gladiolus, or larkspur.
4. a brownish or reddish-orange variety of zircon, used as a gem; jacinth.
5. (in ancient times) a precious stone of a blue color, probably the sapphire.
6. a purplish blue.
